In July I was able to attend a Spinning Babies training. It was an amazing experience and was able to learn about optimal positioning alongside other doulas, nurses, massage therapists, and midwives.
Spinning babies is often thrown around as a solution to breech or mal-positioned babies, but it is so much more. It is an approach to pregnancy and subsequently childbirth that allows us to recognize that the baby’s position may be causing pain, discomfort or stalled labor.
I have perused their website often in the past 5 years, often leaving frustrated and not really grasping the concepts. When I saw they were coming to town I knew I needed to attend so I could understand better what the theories were.
We discussed prenatal exercises, how to help a client belly map (or speculate on the position of their baby), and ways that we might be able to encourage a baby to move into the necessary position for labor and delivery.
In one of the very next labors I attended I utilized some of the spinning baby’s techniques to help a baby get into the position they needed to be in! I am so happy to have had this opportunity to attend this training and learn from not only the trainer but the many birth-workers that were in attendance.
